The applicant shall be responsible for fabrication and installation of a sign, in accordance with the following guidelines. The applicant shall obtain an Encroachment Permit (R-1 No Fee) for installation within the public right-of-way. The encroachment permit application shall be accompanied by a photo of the proposed location.
Installation of church guide signs should be permitted only if all the following conditions are met:
- Sign position shall be within 1/4 mile from the church.
- Each church is limited to one sign.
- Sign shall not be placed on traffic signal pole.
- Sign may be placed on public pole such as a metal electrolier.
- Sign may be placed on existing sign post with guide signs.
- Sign shall not be placed on existing sign post with warning signs.
- Sign shall not be placed on existing sign post with regulatory signs, except parking prohibition signs, bike route signs, truck route signs, speed limit signs, or as approved by the City Traffic Engineer.
- A total of no more than 3 signs may be allowed on one post/pole.
- No new sign post shall be erected for church signs.
- Lateral clearance from the face of curb to the sign panel shall be no less than 1/2 foot.
- Vertical clearance from the ground surface to the bottom of sign panel shall be no less than 7 feet in pedestrian walking area, such as sidewalk and roadway shoulder.
- Sign shall be placed at least 50 feet from the edge of travel way of the crossing street at intersection.
- Sign shall not block the view of traffic signals or any traffic control devices.
Sign standards:
- Sign and sign mounting standards shall conform to the State standards for guide signs.
- Sign panel shall have white letters on green background.
- Sign panel shall be 24" wide, 18" high.
- A sample church sign may be found on the west side of Winchester Boulevard just north of Rincon Avenue.

The sign shall become the City's property upon installation. The City shall have complete authority to relocate or remove the installed church signs without notification. The City will not maintain or replace church signs. The replacement of church signs may be permitted at the requester's own cost and through the same process as installing a new church sign.
