The Great America Litter Pickup Annual Event was held on Saturday, April 23, 2016. The venue was changed from the previously planned location at Los Gatos County Park to Campbell Park in order to provide volunteers additional opportunities to serve.
Over 200 volunteers and staff members from various agencies and organizations teamed up, collecting 900 pounds of trash and 3,160 pounds of recyclables for a total of 4,060 pounds of debris that was removed from the City’s trails, parks, and right-of-ways.
Trash and graffiti were removed from behind Rolling Hills Elementary School, Los Gatos County Park, the right-of-way along Winchester Blvd. and the railroad tracks, Campbell Los Gatos Creek Trail and the on and off ramps to Highway 17 at Hamilton and Salmar. Other activities included enhancement projects at Campbell Park to deter vandals and encourage users to take pride in their park; these projects included planting 10 trees and placing 100 yards of fibar into the three playgrounds and three tons of decomposed granite onto pathways.
Caltrans, VTA and West Valley Clean Water Program provided great support for the event and special recognition was given to all of the volunteers from many organizations which included the Rotary, Home Church, Delphi Academy, Girl Scout Troops, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and others. Many comments were shared by attendees throughout the day about the spirit of service and community.
